Walter Eckhart served as director of the Salk Institute Cancer Center and head of the Molecular and Cell Biology Laboratory for more than 30 years. He studied regulation of cell growth, including the effects of cancer-causing genes (oncogenes), growth factors, and communication between adjacent cells (gap junctional intercellular communication). While he was a professor emeritus at the Salk Institute, he served as a member of advisory committees for cancer centers, the National Institutes of Health, Salk Women & Science, and voluntary health agencies.
For eleven consecutive times, the Salk Institute has earned
the highest possible ranking from Charity Navigator, America’s largest
independent charity and nonprofit evaluator. This exceptional
designation is awarded to only 2 percent of over 10,000 nonprofits
evaluated, indicating the Institute’s exceptional fiscal accountability
and transparency.
